Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge 100 Gallon

Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge is a granular zeolitic nitrate absorber for use in freshwater tanks or tap water. This filtration medium works in two ways: it slowly adsorbs small amounts of ammonia that are released by your fish and natural processes, and fosters anaerobic bacteria due to its porous structure which help to denitrify the water. This bacterial denitrification slowly reduces nitrate levels in the aquarium. The Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge prolongs the time allowed between water changes by keeping nitrates low.
Directions: Place the Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge in a large mesh (800 micron) bag on top of your wet-dry filter or in a canister filter, allowing water to flow through the material. It can also be very efficiently used in de-nitrators and other slow-flow applications. Remember to test the nitrate levels in your tank regularly. Several weeks will be required to see an appreciable drop in nitrates. If nitrate levels are dangerously high we recommend initially carrying out large water changes with a low nitrate salt, such as Kent Marine Sea Salt. Tip: to help control nitrate levels do not overfeed the tank, use good maintenance practices including routine water changes, regularly vacuum up detritus, use of Kent Marine Reef Carbon regularly and change filter floss regularly.
Deionization or reverse osmosis filtration of tap water will also help if your tap water contains significant levels of nitrates. Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge can be used simultaneously with the Kent Marine Phosphate Sponge to lower the levels of these fertilizers and help reduce growth of these unsightly algae.
Anaerobic Denitrator: For severe nitrate problems, consider purchasing a filter housing in which to place the Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge. Fill the sponge housing with aquarium water and let it stand totally closed, with no water movement for 3 weeks. This will give the bacteria time to multiply and populate the sponge's porous structure. Tap your main pressure line from your aquarium pump with small airline tubing and a small air valve. Adjust the valve to allow one drop per second to flow out of the filter back into your sump. This unit requires no feeding and therefore cannot produce deadly hydrogen sulfide gas as other systems may.
